The A2A database contains catalogues describing collections of archives held in England and Wales. It will give precise and useful information about archives in England and Wales. It is regularly updated. The database contains more detailed descriptions of collections than the NRA but is less comprehensive.

British Records Association

The BRA was formed in 1932 to ‘promote the preservation, care, use and publication of records’. Its main function is to rescue documents in danger of loss or destruction, distributing them to relevant repositories and offering advice to record-holders. The Association’s membership is open to anyone with an interest in records. Its publications include the journal Archives and a biennial newsletter, as well as The Archives and the User series detailing sources for various topics, and Guidelines, a set of leaflets advising on the care of records, etc. The Association holds an annual conference and regular training days on records and record-keeping.

National Archives

The National Archives has one of the largest archival collections in the world, spanning 1000 years of British history, from Domesday Book of 1086 to government papers recently released to the public. The National Archives, which covers England, Wales and the United Kingdom, was formed in April 2003 by bringing together the Public Record Office and the Historical Manuscripts Commission. It is responsible for looking after the records of central government and the courts of law, and making sure everyone can look at them.

The NRA is a searchable list of archival collections held in British Archives. It currently consists of over 44,000 unpublished lists and catalogues that describe archival holdings in the United Kingdom and overseas.
