London and Middlesex Archaeological Society

The London and Middlesex Archaeological Society was formed in 1855 to investigate ‘the antiquities and early history of the Cities of London and Westminster and the Metropolitan County of Middlesex’. It has published 51 transactions (including excavation reports and articles on more general historicaltopics) and 18 special papers (in the form of monographs on specific archaeological themes) which are searchable on-line. Its library is housed in the Museum of London and comprises an extensive collection of reference books and journals

LMA holds an enormous amount of archival records for the Greater London Area. They are a Registered Place of Deposit and therefore collect many documents of interest to the local and family historian such as parish records and hospital records.

London’s Museums, Archives and Libraries

MLA London is a local strategic development agency for museums, libraries and archives. Its aim is to ‘to improve people's lives by building knowledge, supporting learning, inspiring creativity and celebrating identity’, encouraging partnership working between the three sectors and seeking to increase funding. Its specific projects include the development of London Screen Archive Network; representation of archives, libraries and museums on the Greater London Authority’s Disability and Culture Research Project; and a survey of collections and collection policy.

London Record Society

The London Record Society was founded in 1964 with the aim of publishing transcripts, abstracts and lists of sources for London history, and promoting interest in London history. It publishes a volume relating to an area of specific interest annually; the volumes are listed on its website.

PhotoLondon

PhotoLondon is an on-line gateway to photographic collections held by English Heritage’s National Monuments Record, Guildhall Library, London Metropolitan Archives, Museum of London and Westminster City Archives. These five repositories hold nearly one million photographs of London, from the 1850s to the present. The site includes a map of London with links to over 60 public collections, a noticeboard featuring news, articles and exhibitions; and material on photographers and photographic history.
